Protecting Your Computer: Staying Virus-Free

Corey Koidahl, Technical Services

No computer user wants to hear the dreaded news: 'You have a virus.' The world of hackers has devised many quickly-spreading viruses that are easily transmitted via internet downloads, email, CDs, thumb drives, and other removable hardware.  These virsuses have the ability to debilitate computers and cause the loss of valuable data.  Fortunately, there are steps that everyone can take to prevent the intrusion of a most unwelcome virus.

Here are some tips:

Browse carefully

You know the websites that promise pirated versions of expensive software, or offer free stuff that sounds way too good to be true?  Beware of more than doing business on these sites--they just may drop an occasional virus on an unsuspecting user.

Avoid Mr. Gates Neighborhood

Sorry to say so, but almost all viruses take aim at Microsoft products. Using different browsers (like Mozilla), email programs and even operating systems will greatly reduce your chances of being infected.

Be current

Keep your system up to date. Certainly we're talking about anti-virus software, but you should also keep your operating system, browser, and email server current with security patches that the manufacturer provides. Those downloads help protect your system from many known viruses, and failure to do so leaves your computer more vulnerable than necessary.

Be smart

Above all, be smart about how you work and play on your computer. Viruses typically come cloaked in files that look just a little strange. If you don't recognize a source, or notice a peculiar-looking file, avoid it, even if you're curious. Unknown or unexpected attachments should be ignored unless you trust the source.

Don't act like a child

Do you let your son or daughter use your computer?  In order to secure your system from your little ones, create a Windows user profile, without administrative privileges, for younger operators.  Non-administrative profiles are restricted from installing new software, which may contain viruses.

Virus protection is a necessary state of mind for all computer users.  Hope these thoughts are helpful--call if you need us.

CRS
In Our Community

-----------------------------------

We're proud to be involved in many community projects. Here are a few recent events in which we participated:

The Twin Cities Marathon

Still known as the most beautiful urban marathon in the country, we provided computers for the Marathon's offices and for the merchandise booth at last fall's event.

Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels

Once again we donated printers to help manage delivery of 15,000 meals this past Thanksgiving to needy Twin Cities families. Rodney has been personally involved with this annual event, featuring more than 2,000 volunteers, for the past ten years.

We invite you to visit the Community Involvement page on our website to read about other organizations and events we support.

ICMA
Client Story

Building Relationships:

International City/County Management Assn. (ICMA)

In 2005, CRS provided computers for the International City/County Management Association, held that year at the Minneapolis Convention Center. As the event wound down, conference coordinator Sallie Burnett said to us, "We sure wish you could come to San Antonio with us for next year's meeting."

Sallie didn't really expect us to say yes. But CRS soon provided ICMA with a proposal to handle their technology needs for the 2006 meeting in San Antonio. "They sent us a quote, which was quite competitive with one we got from a San Antonio firm, and decided to hire CRS again to provide equipment in San Antonio," recalls Sallie.

Our work with ICMA is a great example of how CRS has been able to add value to events no matter where they are located. We want our clients to know that we're happy to provide equipment rental for events outside of our Twin Cities home.

This past fall, CRS made the journey to the ICMA conference in Pittsburgh. John and Corey drove a van full of computers (approximately 50 laptops and 50 desktop computers) on the 15-hour ride, and Eric flew out to meet them and assist with onsite service. We set up and maintained equipment for three Internet cafes, press rooms, registration, onsite administration, and training classrooms. "We even loaded some customized learning software onto their classroom computers," recalled Corey.

In addition to bringing our equipment out to the conference, we arranged for high-volume copiers and even provided a heavy-duty secuity safe, an item that we don't typically rent. Corey and Eric even stepped in to offer some additional services when a key member of the ICMA staff became ill.

Sallie has already asked CRS to start planning to handle technology rentals for their conference in Richmond, Virginia next fall. "Their prices are very reasonable, but their team's customer service is outstanding, which is more to me than price," says Sallie. "It's so easy to work with them."

By now, CRS and ICMA are stuck to each other like super glue. "It's like going off to visit friends," says John. "We get to work with people we like being with."

"It seems like our conference is already second nature to CRS," adds Sallie.  "They seem to know just what we need."  CRS clearly understands their needs, and we look forward to working with them again in 2008.

"I really enjoy CRS because the job is so dynamic, whether I'm talking on the phone, working on our website, or helping solve technical problems, I'm always having fun."

Dixon Bordiano, a student at the University of Minnesota, now works part-time for CRS as a technical and web expert, providing valuable onsite support for many of our clients.  An artist, interactive expert and avid reader, Dixon is equally comfortable behind an easel as he is using a computer.
